Joshua Kuroda-Grauer's breakthrough performance quickly turned into a nightmare on Monday night. The Athletics rookie recorded the first home run of his Major League career during a 5-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, but the celebration was cut short after a painful foul ball resulted in a ruptured testicle and emergency surgery.
The 23-year-old infielder opened the second inning with his milestone home run and appeared to be on his way to another standout performance. However, during his third plate appearance in the fifth inning, a sharply hit foul ball struck him directly in the groin, causing immediate pain despite his attempt to remain in the game.
Kuroda-Grauer battled through the discomfort, collecting a single and even staying on the field defensively at third base through the bottom of the inning. The pain eventually became too severe, forcing him to exit before the sixth inning as team medical staff evaluated the injury.
The Athletics confirmed Tuesday that Kuroda-Grauer underwent emergency surgery and was placed on the 10-day injured list. The diagnosis—a ruptured testicle—is an extremely rare injury in professional baseball and will require a lengthy rehabilitation process before he can return to game action.
The timing is especially unfortunate given Kuroda-Grauer's remarkable start in the majors. Ranked as Oakland's No. 8 prospect by MLB Pipeline, he debuted on June 29 and quickly became one of the club's brightest young contributors during an otherwise injury-plagued season.
Through his first 17 Major League games, Kuroda-Grauer was batting .417 with 25 hits in 60 at-bats, one home run, four RBIs and a stellar 1.019 OPS while showcasing his versatility across second base, third base and shortstop without committing an error.
Medical reports indicate that recovery from this type of surgery typically ranges from four to eight weeks, although complete healing can take up to three months. While the Athletics remain hopeful Kuroda-Grauer will return later this season, his timeline will ultimately depend on how well his rehabilitation progresses following this frightening and highly unusual injury.
