A viral incident involving two MLB spectators has ignited controversy after an elderly fan was filmed hitting a younger attendee who stayed seated during the national anthem at Wrigley Field.
Video recorded during a daytime matchup in the Chicago Cubs-Minnesota Twins series captured the older man approaching the fan, persistently instructing him to "get up" as the anthem was being performed. Following the younger spectator's response, the man stepped closer and maintained the confrontation before delivering a slap to the back of his head.
The altercation prompted startled responses from surrounding spectators, with numerous individuals voicing disapproval of the physical encounter. The younger fan ultimately rose to his feet after the confrontation.

Even after the younger fan stood up, the older spectator kept yelling at him and others nearby while the anthem continued playing - behavior some observers contended was itself disrespectful to the occasion.
The footage has subsequently become viral, accumulating over two million views on Instagram and triggering an intense discussion online. While certain users supported the older man's behavior, others criticized the choice to strike the fellow spectator.
"You should be standing for any anthem of any country out of respect, the old man taught him some manners with the slap," commented one fan, while another stated: "It looks like no one standing around had a problem with this love tap reminding the dude, in case he forgot to show respect for the our country". A third individual stated: "'I love my country and have served but the whole point of being free is being able to have the freedom to exercise your beliefs. Sitting down during the national anthem is very distasteful but he has every right to do so."
A fourth commenter wrote: "To slap him is not okay. I can't believe no other fan stepped up. I would have in a minute. You can not like what the kid was doing, but that's no right to smack him."
Chicago Police confirmed they are aware of the viral footage and have examined its contents. Officials informed TMZ they had analyzed the images, though no formal police report has been submitted regarding the incident.
