Michigan basketball overheard guard LJ Cason’s potential departure nearly a week ago. Especially amid head coach Dusty May’s departure. Now Cason has officially entered the College Basketball Transfer Portal as of Monday.
College basketball insider for On3 Pete Nakos revealed the decision. But Nakos also unveiled an early contender to watch for Cason.
“Sources tell On3’s Pete Nakos and Joe Tipton that Miami has emerged as the top early school to watch for Cason,” the report revealed.

Cason knows the Sunshine State very well, too.
“The Lakeland, Florida native averaged 8.4 points, 2.4 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game in 2025-26 before an ACL injury,” Nakos wrote.
Miami under head coach Jai Lucas put together one of the nation’s best transfer portal classes this cycle. Including landing mammoth big Somto Cyril of Georgia, who’ll add some muscle and interior scoring next season.
Cason adds a deep three element if brought over to Coral Gables. His strength is 3-point shooting and averaged more than 40% of his shots behind the arc.
Michigan still became led by a talented frontcourt featuring three future NBA Draft selections. Forward Yaxel Lendeborg led the scoring charge while Morez Johnson Jr. provided a scoring spark too. Then 7-foot-3 big Aday Mara delivered the dirty work on the rebounding and blocking end. The national championship winning trio all landed in the first round of the June 22 draft evening.
Now Cason becomes a significant portal loss for the defending national champs. Michigan turns to Mike Boynton Jr. as the newest head coach in his coaching promotion.
