Michael J. Fox is celebrating one of the most remarkable chapters of his career, not despite Parkinson's disease, but alongside it.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the Emmy-winning actor reflected on the bleak outlook he received shortly after his 1991 diagnosis, revealing that doctors believed his time in front of the camera would be limited. Instead, he is preparing to film another season of “Shrinking” while continuing to lead one of the world’s most influential Parkinson’s research organizations.

Why Michael J. Fox Says He Was Expected to Stop Acting Within a Decade

When Fox first learned he had Parkinson’s disease in the early 1990s, he was given a prediction that would have ended many careers. Looking back, he recalled being told that he had about 10 more years to continue acting before the condition would make performing on camera too difficult. More than 35 years later, that timeline has long since passed.

Rather than stepping away permanently, Fox is enjoying a new career milestone. Fresh off an Emmy nomination for his guest performance in “Shrinking,” he confirmed that he will return for the Apple TV+ comedy’s fourth season. Reflecting on what acting still means to him, he said, “It’s really prolonged my life and made my life interesting in a way that I didn’t think it would be to this point.” He also made clear that retirement is not something he sees in absolute terms, adding, “I’m not retired from acting, but if I didn’t act again, it would be for a very good reason. I let Parkinson’s make decisions for me.”

His journey has extended far beyond Hollywood. After keeping his diagnosis private for several years, Fox publicly revealed he had Parkinson’s in 1998 and later established The Michael J. Fox Foundation, which has become one of the leading organizations funding research into new treatments and a potential cure. Through its support of large-scale scientific studies, the foundation has helped accelerate drug development and deepen researchers’ understanding of the disease.

Even with decades of advocacy behind him, Fox remains optimistic about what lies ahead. Speaking about the progress being made, he said he believes a cure is possible within his lifetime. Summing up the philosophy that has guided both his personal life and charitable work, he remarked, “We have to find a way to get through every day, and if we can find a way to get through every day and at the same time be fueling for our actions and our deeds and our philanthropy, then that’s a great thing. It’s individually elevating lives. So it’s not just the money, it’s not just the science, it’s the humanity.”
