Michael Jackson‘s biopic has checked off another massive milestone at the box office.

Nearly three months after its April 24 theatrical release, Michael has officially become a $1 billion-grossing film, Deadline reported July 12. Distributed by Lionsgate, the biopic chronicling the star’s rise to fame is the studio’s first film to attain the milestone.

The biopic, starring the late King of Pop’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, has earned $371.8 million domestically and $629.8 internationally, the outlet reported. It earned $314 million in its debut weekend alone, PEOPLE previously reported.

Michael earned its spot as the highest-grossing music biopic of all time in June, after its worldwide earnings of $911.9 million surpassed the 2018 Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which grossed $910.9 million worldwide. Michael later broke Oppenheimer‘s record as the highest-grossing biopic overall, beating out the 2023 film’s earnings of $975.8 million.

Prior to Michael‘s theatrical release, Lionsgate’s highest-grossing film was Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, which earned $865.2 million by the end of its run worldwide, per Deadline.

Michael is the second film released in 2026 to achieve the $1 billion benchmark, following the success of Super Mario Galaxy.

Alongside Jaafar, Juliano Krue Valdi plays the younger version of Michael, while Nia Long stars as Jackson matriarch Katherine Jackson. Colman Domingo portrays the family patriarch Joe Jackson, who managed Michael and his brothers in the Jackson 5, and daughters Rebbie Jackson, La Toya Jackson and Janet Jackson.
