The New York Mets are expected to be sellers at the trade deadline. At 43-59, they are in fifth place in the National League East and 9.5 games back from a wild card spot, making a postseason appearance extremely unlikely.
While it hasn't been the season the Mets hoped for, they can still take advantage of having a talented roster. New York has a handful of talented players that contenders could use, including starting pitcher Clay Holmes.
However, the right-hander certainly isn't looking to force his way out. In fact, when speaking to The Athletic's Will Sammon and Tim Britton, Holmes said that he is "definitely open" to an extension with the Mets.
That is beginning to look less like a possibility, though. In an article published by The Athletic, Ken Rosenthal reports that New York is leaning toward trading the two-time All-Star, rather than working out a new contract.
"While the possibility remains that the New York Mets and Clay Holmes agree to an extension, there’s a significantly greater likelihood of a trade, said people familiar with the situation who were granted anonymity in exchange for their candor," Rosenthal said. "Holmes, out since mid-May because of a fibula fracture, is set to make a rehab start this week. He holds a player option for 2027 worth $12 million."
Despite making just nine starts this season, Holmes is still a valuable trade piece. In 52.2 innings, he has accumulated a 2.39 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP and 45 strikeouts. His opponents are slashing .206/.276/.294 for a .570 OPS.
As Rosenthal mentioned, he is working toward a return soon. MLB.com reports that he is slated to pitch in the minors "around July 23" and has an expected return for late July.
With the deadline set for Aug. 3 and less than two weeks away, Holmes could be one of the Mets' biggest trade pieces. With a rehab assignment expected to start soon, interested clubs will have the opportunity to see him back in action.
