As the countdown to Christopher Nolan’s mythic blockbuster The Odyssey enters its final, electric stretch before this Friday’s release, the film's A-list leads are treating us to some of the most genuinely wholesome press tour moments in years.

In a newly released, incredibly intimate “One on One” interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, Matt Damon completely melted the room when he paused the banter to tell Anne Hathaway exactly how her otherworldly talent completely saved the film’s most critical, emotional climax.

If you have been following the glittering red carpets from London to Paris this month, you know that the hype for Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey has completely transcended typical movie marketing. It is officially a full-blown cultural event.

At the center of this titanic production is the epic, tragedy-laden romance of Odysseus (Matt Damon) and Penelope (Anne Hathaway). While Nolan’s movies are famous for their mind-bending practical stunts and massive, bone-rattling IMAX scale, it is the quiet, devastating human emotion that holds them together.

During their gorgeous joint cover feature for Harper’s Bazaar UK, Damon took a moment to explain that the emotional peak of the entire three-hour film came down to one single, high-stakes scene—and he credits Hathaway entirely for making it work.

“I Just Looked Into Your Eyes, and That Was It”

Hathaway and Damon have been friends for over a decade, meaning they have plenty of room to tease one another. But when Bazaar asked about the intensity of filming their long-awaited, late-film confrontation, Damon dropped the jokes to lay out a stunning testament to Hathaway’s craft:

“Obviously, working with you was pretty tough. No, honestly, working with you, I don’t want to embarrass you in front of the Harper’s Bazaar crowd. But I said to Chris when we shot that, because the whole scene, the movie kind of comes to a head in this scene that we have. And so I’ve been working on it for months and months. I just looked into your eyes, and that was it; I got completely transported, I swear to God. After he saw the dailies, Chris said he was really excited about how it worked, and I said, ‘That was Annie, I swear to God.’ It’s like surfing a wave, and you don’t even have to think about it. You’re just off.”

The sheer sincerity in Damon’s voice left Hathaway visibly moved. It’s the kind of actor-to-actor validation that reminds us that beneath the massive budget, the 300-pound IMAX cameras, and the global fame, these are still just two master craftsmen reacting to one another in a room.

The Reunion of Giants

This isn’t the first time Damon and Hathaway have shared a Christopher Nolan set, but The Odyssey gives them their most intensely collaborative and emotionally connected canvas yet.

Why Their Chemistry is the Crucial Piece of ‘The Odyssey’

While fans are eagerly lining up to see Nolan’s practical depiction of the Cyclops and the roaring, hand-crafted wooden ships navigating actual ocean currents, early press reactions are confirming that it’s the quiet moments in Ithaca that elevate the film.

  • The Emotional Anchor: For The Odyssey to work, the audience has to believe in Penelope and Odysseus’s core connection despite twenty years of physical and geographical separation.
  • The “Unending Reserve” of Emotion: Damon has previously praised Hathaway’s incredible work ethic, noting she routinely gives “full, tear-filled performances” even when the camera is pointed elsewhere to help her scene partners.
  • A Mature Efficacy: Christopher Nolan himself recently pointed out that both actors have developed a quiet, stunning maturity since they last worked together on Interstellar twelve years ago, making their reunion feel beautifully earned.

With the movie opening this weekend, the box office is tracking for historic, record-shattering heights. But as Damon so beautifully put it, the heart of this ancient Greek blockbuster belongs entirely to Penelope’s eyes.
