The characters will return in style in live-action this year, with multiple stars from Fox's X-Men franchise set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, as shown by the first trailer for the Avengers movie.
At this time, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine has not been officially confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday by Marvel or the actor. Jackman's latest appearance as Logan came in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor's MCU debut continued Jackman's long list of hits as Wolverine, breaking the $1 billion mark to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
There is no doubt that should Jackman's Wolverine show up in Avengers: Doomsday, he will become one of the movie's biggest talking points. That is just the nature of Jackman's tenure as the character. Debuting as Wolverine in 2000's X-Men, the actor has made the role his, with both Fox and Marvel tailoring Wolverine to Jackman's strengths. The results are undeniable.
That said, it is in X-Men '97 season 2 that Marvel Studios introduced the real Wolverine. One of the best Disney+ Marvel shows, X-Men '97 features a wide roster of mutants. In season 1, Wolverine took a bit of a backseat, which was connected to Jackman's Wolverine taking up most of the spotlight for himself in the live-action movies. However, his role has grown in X-Men '97 season 2, and the real Wolverine has shone through.
X-Men '97 Shows Wolverine's Darker Side

However, for the most part of his tenure, even when his version of Wolverine dabbled in the character's worst elements, like being too stubborn or cynical, Wolverine was still shown as a good guy at the end of the day and a major action hero. However, that is not always true for the Wolverine we know from Marvel Comics. Logan has done a series of dark things in the source material, like trying to kill a powerless Scarlet Witch, and actually killing many of his children — unknowingly.
The truth of the matter is that Wolverine is not always great. Logan has made a lot of mistakes, and X-Men '97 season 2, episode 5, "Weapon X, Lies, and DVDs," focused on that version of the character. Wolverine put together a crew made up of old Team X mutants and the X-Man Morph to go to a Weapon X facility. However, he lied to them about the mission's goal, making the characters risk their lives for what was ultimately just a means of getting his Adamantium skeleton back. Multiple members of the team died, and Wolverine did not bat an eye.
Hugh Jackman's Wolverine Can Show That Darker Side In 2026
While Jackman's Wolverine has not yet been confirmed to return in Avengers: Doomsday, both he and Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool have been reported to appear in the film. Given how the first trailer for the MCU's next Avengers movie showed the X-Men and the Avengers fighting, the door is open for Jackman's Wolverine to be more like X-Men '97 season 2's version of the character. Avengers: Doomsday should be all about incursions, which are the events where multiple universes come crashing against one another. In the comics, they could be fixed by destroying one of the Earths.
Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier is seemingly witnessing another Earth explode from the X-Mansion's window, which could suggest that the X-Men have no problems taking out other universes to save their own. Given how Channing Tatum's Gambit was in the trailer, and he debuted in Deadpool & Wolverine, if Jackman's Wolverine is in the movie, he could be sent on dark missions by Xavier. Additionally, seeing Wolverine and other X-Men fight MCU heroes could also bring out a nastier side of the character that Jackman has not often tapped into.
