Part of what makes Spider-Man such a special hero is how the people close to him shape him. From his Uncle Ben, who taught him "With great power comes great responsibility," to his ever-supportive Aunt May, the love of his life, Mary Jane, and more, Peter Parker's family and friends are almost as recognizable as the web-slinger himself for the roles they play in his world, no matter how chaotic it may get. That has similarly held true in the MCU, where Tom Holland's Peter is often backed by Zendaya's MJ and Jacob Batalon's Ned Leeds. Yet, on the page, Marvel recently introduced a new, long-lost member of the family, and now, they're about to explore him a bit deeper.
The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 7 recently saw the villainous Torment targeting members of Peter's bloodline, which unexpectedly led him to Cormac Crane. Through the brush with danger and his first meeting with the friendly neighborhood web-slinger, he learned that he was, in fact, Peter's cousin, the son of May and Ben Parker. Not only did a genetic test prove his DNA matched, but his birthday also matched that of the couple's supposedly stillborn son, Richard Benjamin Parker, and he bears a striking resemblance to his late dad. Even in the chaos of Spider-Man's life, it's a lot to process, and issue #33, which just released today, explores Cormac and how both Peter and May process his sudden presence in their lives. Marvel Comics released a sneak preview of the story showing the awkward air between all three as this new member of the family tries to make a good impression.
The sneak peek opens with Cormac rolling up in a limo to pick up Aunt May for a day together catching up. Since neither realized they were family until recently, they're basically strangers to each other, and they have a lot to learn. Waiting to greet him is his new cousin, Peter, who shares some awkward pleasantries and a light reminder that he doesn't call his heroic duties "swinging work." Because of how they met, Cormac knows Pete's alter ego and keeps it under wraps for the sake of May. They're interrupted when she walks up ready to spend some quality time with her two "sons," until first responders go speeding past en masse. Duty calls and Peter has to leave for a "work emergency," though like his dad, Cormac understands quite well the responsibility he faces as a superhero in New York.
Who Is Behind 'The Amazing Spider-Man's Latest Adventure?
Learning more about Cormac isn't all that Peter is up to in this issue. Penned by award-winning Spider-Man writer and general Marvel and DC veteran Joe Kelly, The Amazing Spider-Man #33 will see the return of one of Spidey's old foes, but the battle doesn't go as expected. The Department of Damage Control swings in to finish the fight themselves, which strikes Peter as odd considering their job is usually to clean up after the dust has settled. It's just another wrinkle to his chaotic world after losing his dream job because of his clone, Ben Reilly, learning that his former boss Dr. Osmani-Milton's son is secretly the teenage superhero Kintsugi, and seeing his friend transformed into a mushroom monster. Ed McGuiness penciled the art within the story and handled the cover alongside Marcio Menyz.
