Mark Kotsay: Joshua Kuroda-Grauer in 'great spirits' after testicle surgery

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Joshua Kuroda-Grauer "was joking" after undergoing emergency surgery for a ruptured testicle.

Athletics rookie infielder Joshua Kuroda-Grauer is seemingly in good spirits after taking a brutal hit to the private area after a foul ball.

Kuroda-Grauer suffered a ruptured testicle in the Athletics' 5-2 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Phoenix on Monday, July 20. He underwent emergency surgery and was placed on the A's 10-day injured list.

The club said the 23-year-old is resting comfortably.

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay visited Kuroda-Grauer in the hospital and told MLB.com's Martín Gallegos, who covers the A's, that the rookie is in "great spirits."

"He was joking. His personality is amazing," Kotsay said. "I think he might be the only player in history to (rupture) a testicle, stay in the game, get a hit and play another half inning of defense."

Kuroda-Grauer finished the game 2-for-3, including his first-career home run. His performance increased his average to .417.

Kuroda-Grauer made his A's debut on June 29 against the Los Angeles Dodgers after he was called up from the Las Vegas Aviators, the Athletics' Triple-A affiliate. He registered three hits in his debut and continued to be a consistent hitter with the A's, tallying eight multi-hit games in 16 games.
