Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene didn’t mince words after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave a social media eulogy to fallen U.S. troops.
Rather than join in on Hegseth’s tribute to two soldier’s “sacrifice,” the 52-year-old conservative firebrand instead said, “What the f*** are you talking about?”
On July 17, two U.S. soldiers were killed in an Iranian airstrike in Jordan. Hegseth, a 46-year-old former Fox News host, wrote on X, “Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve.”
Greene went scorched earth on Hegseth in response, writing, “Sacrifice?? What the f*** are you talking about?? They did not willingly sacrifice themselves. They were killed because of the war you, Trump, and the admin, are waging on behalf of a FOREIGN COUNTRY, Israel. You mean their deaths fuel your bloodlust for a senseless war.”
The dramatic and fiery response underlines how far Greene has broken from MAGA in the past year, first because of the Trump administration’s reluctance to release the Epstein files and then because of Israel’s influence on the American government.
To the latter point, she has been a fierce critic of the war in Iran, which Donald Trump entered on the pretext of preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. However, a cohort of conservative firebrands that includes Greene, Megyn Kelly and Tucker Carlson, have argued that the U.S. has entered the war at the behest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump has denied that Netanyahu influenced his decision.
Greene’s profane post came hours after she gave a more measured and lengthier diatribe against the war.
“Since Trump started his war on Iran, 14 U.S. service members have been killed and 427 wounded as reported by the AP. This is tragic and shouldn’t be happening,” she wrote. “We voted to end wars that cost our taxpayers hundreds of billions to trillions of dollars and kill and injure our beloved military men and women. We are in no danger from Iran; they can’t even hit us with a missile and all of our intelligence sources said they were nowhere near having a nuclear weapon. This war was started for Israel and is now all about the Strait of Hormuz and control of oil.”
“I cannot believe this is where we are after all the America First promises were made in 2024,” she concluded.
The war looks primed to escalate after Trump ripped up his unpopular “memorandum of understanding” with Iran, which critics called a “total surrender” by the U.S. Trump has continued to say Iran is close to surrendering for months, though there is currently no end in sight for the war.
