Whoopi Goldberg made Anne Hathaway cry on national television.
Fortunately, these were tears of joy and gratitude.
During the Monday, July 20, episode of the iconic panel talk show, the longtime co-host took the time to give Hathaway the praise she obviously deserves. The A-lister was on the show alongside her Odyssey costar Matt Damon and director Christopher Nolan.
As soon as the trio sat down, Goldberg began singling out Hathaway. “I’m hopping right in,” she said. “First of all, I gotta tell you. You were wonderful. You were so powerful. You were, like, woman.”
She continued, “I loved this movie. I can’t even tell you. I had the best time. I loved it.”
After more interview questions, Goldberg said, “Anne Hathaway,” which was enough for the Princess Diaries star to start welling up, hiding her face in her hands and crying out, “Don’t!”
Undeterred, the presenter said, “It’s been wonderful watching you. It’s been wonderful watching you grow up, and you have just blossomed, turned into this fabulous actress. Girl!”
At this point, the Les Misérables actress was fully in tears and reiterated, “No, don’t!”
Goldberg pressed on, “Yes! Yes! You need to know!”
Hathaway told her, “I would be crying if I wasn’t pregnant right now!”
Goldberg added, “This is something you need to know and remember.”
Hathaway replied, “I don’t know what to say, thank you. You know how I feel about you.”
One X user posted the clip, writing, “she deserves this moment so much i love herrrrr😭.”
Commenters couldn’t have agreed more, with one replying, “she deserves every second of this joy ahhhh.”
Someone else said, “i was there and she wouldn’t stop crying even after the interview 😭.”
The Odyssey is out now and has garnered nothing but total rave reviews. It’s so star-studded that Damon and Hathaway aren’t even scratching the surface: It also features Zendaya, Tom Holland, Elliot Page, Travis Scott, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and so many more.
It’s a big year for Hathaway in particular, since she’s expecting another baby, her third with husband Adam Shulman, who also shares sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6. They announced the happy news in June.
Additionally, she stars in a total of SIX films coming out this year: The Odyssey (July), Mother Mary (April), The Devil Wears Prada 2 (May), The End of Oak Street (August) and Verity (October). What an underachiever…
