A man who shared a discarded piece of paper he found at the park has left the internet lost in a wave of childhood nostalgia.
Posting on Reddit, user Shiftdown explained that he had spotted something white on the ground while walking through the park.
Noticing it was a piece of paper, he picked it up out of curiosity—and realized it was a handwritten love letter from one child to another.
The note read, “[sic] I liked you for a realy long time and ur the prittiest girl in my class…and I want you to be my beutifl girl friend.”
The letter-writer had given four options at the end, each with a box that could be ticked: “Yes,” “Talk to me in recess” and “I love you.”
Right at the end, in much smaller writing, was the option, “No.”
Many adults will remember writing—or considering writing—similar notes to their schoolyard crushes, and the trope made it into plenty of classic kids‘ TV shows.
And this sense of nostalgia hit Reddit users hard, with the post racking up more than 11,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments.
“Better make this ‘no’ box small…maybe she won’t notice it,” one commenter joked, as another pointed out, “Okay, but if you have it…how he gonna get his answer?”
‘I don’t even remember’
“I love how the ‘no’ option is basically on the back,” a third laughed.
Meanwhile, one commenter recalled her own experience with a handwritten note.
“I found something similar but opposite in a box of my old stuff my mom kept,” she wrote. “It was clearly from early elementary school, and it said, ‘Dear [Reddit user], I want to break up with you. – James’.
“I don’t even remember anyone even NAMED James!”
Handwritten Notes
The internet is littered with stories of found pieces of paper—some notes that were meant to make it to someone else, some warnings from neighbors about noise or the upkeep of property, and others that remain mysteries.
One couple found a piece of paper with a strange message written on it—”Destroy with mouth“—and not only kept it for years, but even got it framed and put it up on a wall in their home.
The couple told Newsweek at the time that they have a wall in their home dedicated to the weird and wonderful finds they’ve discovered together, describing it as “finding and creating whatever happiness we could for ourselves.”
