Investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) identified Jonathan Castelan, 18, of South El Monte as the suspect in the fatal stabbing of 15-year-old Aziel Zacapala that happened in the 9700 block of Fern Street at around 1 p.m. on July 10, according to the El Monte Police Department.

Aziel — whose family members say was a promising student and athlete at Rosemead High School — was taken to the hospital, where he died. The LASD said a 16-year-old boy and a young man were also hospitalized after the stabbing.

Details about what led up to the stabbing were not immediately known.

Castelan was taken into custody on Monday, officials said. The case was then presented Wednesday to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, which charged him with three counts: murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the LASD’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
