One forgotten New York Giants defender has a golden opportunity to change the narrative in 2026.

When the New York Giants signed pass-rusher Chauncey Golston to a three-year, $18 million contract back in 2025, they thought he’d build on his career-best 2024 season and help bolster a group teeming with up-and-coming talent. What they got was a pretty disappointing Year 1 instead.

Golston never quite figured out how to work his way into the rotation, and that literally cost him. The 28-year-old should be hoping to kick the year off strong with a dominant training camp to put him back on track to hit his $500,000 sack-laden incentive bonus.

While external expectations for Golston have cooled, his internal motivation has never been higher. Heading into the 2026 season, he should be entirely focused on turning the page, using the lessons of a lost year to fuel a massive comeback.

Chauncey Golston has half a million reasons to bounce back

If you thought last year's rotation was tough to crack, wait until you get a load of 2026's lineup.

The path to a defensive role has never been steeper. The G-Men boast an enviable pass-rushing group that features Abdul Carter, Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Arvell Reese.

Carter is aiming for a massive Year 2 leap, Burns will be chasing a 16.5-sack encore, Thibs is entering the most make-or-break season I've ever seen, and Reese will be figuring out his newish role as off-ball linebacker while also collapsing the pocket from different spots.

Yet Golston has $500,000 worth of incentive to disrupt the rotation and force his way onto the field. His contract rewards him for reaching specific sack totals -- money he left on the table during a 2025 season derailed by ankle and neck injuries.

His bonus structure is the same this year as it was last year:

Starts at 6.0 Sacks: He unlocks the first $125,000 bonus tier.
Hits 8.0 Sacks: The payout bumps up to $250,000.
Reaches 10.0 Sacks: He triggers the maximum $500,000 payday.

After a pseudo-breakout with the Dallas Cowboys in 2024, finishing the season with career-highs in sacks (5.5), tackles for loss (five), tackles (56), and quarterback hits (eight), expectations were he'd be a complement to Big Blue's up-and-coming group. However, he appeared in only 10 games, finishing the season with 1.0 sack, five TFLs, 20 tackles, and one QB hit.

Not exactly the guy general manager Joe Schoen had hoped for when he gave the 28-year-old $12 million guaranteed.

If Golston can channel last year's frustration into fuel, he could give the Giants another devastating weapon. While opposing offensive lines will be all but forced to obsess over stopping Burns, Carter, and Thibodeaux, a rejuvenated Golston could become the X-factor that takes this defensive front from dangerous to borderline unfair.
