Living with type 1 diabetes has put James Norton in “some mad” situations.
The House of the Dragon actor accidentally caused “pandemonium” because his blood sugar was dropping during Nicole Kidman’s speech at the 2024 GQ Man of the Year Awards, Norton recalled on Wednesday’s episode of the Table Manners podcast.
“I put my insulin in thinking we were going to have some bread with the starter,” he explained. “The starter arrived, and it was this little bit of trout, smoked trout, with no carbs. I was on the high table and they were honoring Jude Law and Nicole Kidman and all these people. There were speeches after the starter.”
Norton explained that he had “10 minutes” before fainting because he had already released insulin.
“I couldn’t interrupt the speeches because I was sitting at the high table,” he continued. “I eventually started sweating. You get really wobbly. You eventually will faint.”
The HBO star got up from the table and explained that he’s “a diabetic” and needed food “quickly.” At first, Norton was given “a chocolate bar and some juice.” However, things escalated.
“What I didn’t realize was that pandemonium had broken out backstage. They were like, ‘James Norton’s about to have a hypo.’ In the middle of Nicole Kidman’s speech, someone randomly brings me a steaming plate of potatoes.”
Norton said it “basically” looked like he thought the event was “bulls---,” which was, obviously, not the case. (Hypo refers to hypoglycemia, which occurs when someone with diabetes has a major blood sugar drop.)
The House of Guinness star has spoken at length about managing his type 1 diabetes. During Wednesday’s podcast episode, Norton said he thinks there’s been “huge” progress when it comes to addressing the health challenge. (Norton was diagnosed with the “hidden” condition at age 22.)
“There is incredible advances, because a lot of people in America, there’s a lot of money and and resources being pushed into it, and I think we’re getting closer,” Norton said. “My hope is within like 10-15 years we all won’t be administering insulin. “
He continued, “There’s so many different versions of a cure, but I think we’re close. I mean, obviously, we’re closer than we’ve ever been but actually, suddenly, within the diabetic community people like are like, ‘Well, maybe it actually is getting quite close.’”
