There is much debate as to whether Lane Kiffin is the villain that college football needs, or the anti-hero who is destined to finally win the big one in his head coaching career. One thing is certain. The man likes to have a good time. Although he is under overwhelming pressure to lead LSU back to national championship contention, Kiffin will surely make time for some of his signature instigation and social-media needling.
The Tigers’ new commander of the sidelines prides himself on getting under the skin of his contemporaries and colleagues. With a wry smile and deadpan delivery, he has taken aim at the golf-loving Hugh Freeze, LSU linebacker Whit Weeks (his daughter’s boyfriend) and many others. Georgia HC Kirby Smart confirmed that Kiffin is indeed the troll in the league group chat, just as soon as he learned what the term “troll” means.
“Yup, that’s him,” Smart told Chessa Bouche of Louisiana First News at SEC Media Days. “He would say I look like a troll, so I wanted to make sure it wasn’t defined by appearance, because certainly he is the Adonis of all college football coaches.”

Kiffin was probably smiling while listening to this soundbite, thinking of ways to enhance his “troublemaker” reputation when he speaks to the press later this week. Despite all his antics, it is clear that the Fresno State alum has earned the respect of his peers. Smart extolled Kiffin on Tuesday afternoon.
“He is very bright, he does an incredible job of evolving with college football,” the two-time national title-winning HC said. “He was really good at that with us at Alabama. He made Coach {Nick} Saban uncomfortable, let’s just say what it is. He helped evolutionize that offense and bring it along and did some really good things in a day and age when people weren’t doing them.
“He’s hard to play. I don’t like playing his teams because I know what he knows… But he’s also passionate about his family.”
Kirby Smart and Lane Kiffin spent two years together in Tuscaloosa, doing their part to help Alabama win the 2015-16 championship. They obviously still share a close relationship, one that is surely packed with plenty of humor.
Kiffin will get a chance to break out his trolling persona when he takes the podium at SEC Media Days on Thursday.
