Waugh Drive Bridge bat watching
One of Houston's most unusual summer traditions happens just after sunset, when thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from beneath Waugh Drive Bridge and fill the evening sky. Grab a spot along Buffalo Bayou Park and enjoy the show.

Smither Park

Hermann Park pedal boats
Rent a pedal boat on Hermann Park's scenic, 8-acre McGovern Lake for a different perspective of one of Houston's most popular parks. Boats accommodate up to four people, and tickets are available online or at the Hermann Park Conservancy Gift Shop at Kinder Station.

Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
Kids can explore five miles of nature trails, spot turtles and birds, and take part in seasonal family programming. Admission is free, and the Arboretum regularly offers low-cost activities such as Animal Tales, a weekly story time for children ages 18 months to 3 years that includes a nature-themed book, live animals or biofacts, and a self-guided hike. This August, families can also watch goats from GoatScaping LLC clear invasive vegetation across a seven-acre section of the preserve.
Cost: Free; parking is $6.50. Select programs start at $7 for nonmembers.

Miller Outdoor Theatre
Miller Outdoor Theatre offers free entertainment all season long, starting with the Houston Shakespeare Festival's "The Tempest" and "The Comedy of Errors." The schedule continues through the fall with Japan Festival Houston 2026, Festival Chicano, Classic Albums Live performing the Eagles' "Hotel California" and a Halloween screening of Disney's "Haunted Mansion." Reserve free covered seats online in advance, or bring a blanket and enjoy the open hillside seating.

BEAT THE HEAT
Discovery Green
Discovery Green's Gateway Fountain offers a refreshing place to cool off on hot days. Kids can splash through dozens of water jets while parents watch from nearby shaded seating.

Lone Star Flight Museum
From vintage aircraft to flight simulators, Lone Star Flight Museum packs a lot into one visit. Through July 31, admission is $10 per person and includes access to historic aircraft, interactive exhibits, free flight simulators, docent-led tours and daily programming. The $10 offer is available only at the admissions desk.

KEEP THE KIDS BUSY
Levy Park
Between the splash pad, playground, climbing structures and free daily programming, it's easy to spend several hours at Levy Park without hearing, "I'm bored." Pack a picnic or grab a bite from one of the park's on-site food kiosks, then settle in at the picnic tables and outdoor seating for lunch before heading back to play.
