Long-shuttered Fiesta Mart to reopen after Hurricane Harvey flooded it

Ever since Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the Fiesta Mart along Highway 6 and Clay Road has sat hopelessly vacant. But now, the grocery store is set for a comeback. Come September, the Fiesta at 4310 Highway 6 North will finally reopen, a store manager at a nearby location confirmed to Chron. The grocery chain has already been hiring for the Bear Creek-area location with jobs posted around mid-July.

News about the Bear Creek Fiesta revival popped up this time last year. A permit filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation showed the grocer was planning a $3.5-million renovation project at the site. Construction was expected to finish in early 2026.

Fiesta opened the Bear Creek store in 2001. The store was forced to shutter in 2017 when Hurricane Harvey essentially dropped too much water for the nearby Addicks Reservoir to handle, flooding the store and pretty much everything around it. The store manager I spoke to said insurance money, or rather, the lack of it prevented the store from reopening. Last year Houston Historic Retail reported Fiesta had been involved in litigation over the matter. Possibly complicating things was the grocery chain's sale to Mexico-based Chedraui.

Regardless, Fiesta announced last week that it would be hiring more than 100 people to staff the soon-to-reopen store, KIAH-TV first reported.

There's still no word or development on the other shuttered Fiesta Mart along the East Freeway near Federal Road. That, too, was forced to close after Harvey and has since remained an abandoned lot.
