Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister claims Argentina's players were overwhelmed by the devotion of their supporters when they turned away from Spain's FIFA World Cup trophy lift on Sunday.
Mac Allister and his teammates faced widespread criticism from soccer fans across the globe for appearing to display poor sportsmanship as Spain celebrated their 1-0 extra-time triumph.
With captain Lionel Messi leading the way, Argentina's squad turned their backs on Rodri and the victorious Spanish players hoisting the trophy, choosing instead to focus on their own fans in the stands, via the Liverpool Echo.

Several Argentina players were visibly emotional as they wore their silver medals, and Mac Allister attributes the outpouring of support from fans, family and friends as the reason the moment became too much to bear.
Taking to Instagram, the Reds midfielder and 2022 World Cup champion wrote: "We were so close... that's why it hurts so much. But no one can take away everything we experienced during this World Cup. What they made us feel is extraordinary.
"We had to suffer, there were adversities, but we overcame them TOGETHER. Let's never forget this, please: TOGETHER we are stronger than anyone.
"There are moments that are forever etched in our lives and in our hearts. Just as I will never forget that day in 2022 when, with our World Cup medals, we walked, cried, and celebrated with our people through the streets of Buenos Aires, this Cup also left us with two unforgettable images that reflect the people's connection to this team and that are a balm to the soul of every Argentinian.
"The first was when, after receiving our runner-up medals, the Argentinians in the stadium began to sing wildly. Family, friends, and fans made any other celebration fade into the background.

"The second was the welcome we received in Buenos Aires. Rain and cold, but with a love for our country and for this National Team that nothing could dim. Excuse me for saying it like this, but you're all completely crazy and we love it!"
Argentina have also faced widespread mockery, including from supporters of defeated semifinal opponents England, over their display in the Final, where they failed to register a single shot throughout the 90 minutes.
The South Americans, who had Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández dismissed towards the end of normal time, managed just two attempts on goal across the entire 120 minutes, with the first arriving from Messi three minutes from time.
Mac Allister continued: "Let's cry, because we're Argentinians and we always want to win. But after crying, let's get up, unite, and keep going, because this isn't over. And these past few days, my mum reminded me of a popular saying: 'If there's a rematch, don't be afraid.'
"Finally, my eternal gratitude to our families, friends, those who do the silent work for this national team, and everyone who supports us throughout the year, in good times and bad. You are a huge part of who we are.
"Thank you to all Argentinians for every message of love and support. You don't know how important you are on this journey. And thank you also to those from other countries who send us messages mocking or rejoicing in our pain.
