The report suggests that the FA are looking into possible defamation lawsuits against the people who amplified posts and comments that furthered a negative narrative against them.
Several social media accounts across X and Meta platforms are being looked into for sharing doctored pictures, edited videos, and unsubstantiated claims about the team.
As things stand, the AFA are attempting to gather as much evidence as possible before looking into taking serious legal action.
This could take some time, given the vast number of posts made across social media platforms recently, but this could spell trouble for several people if there is any merit to the potential lawsuit.
Argentina FA could set embarrassing precedent with legal action
While the Argentinian players, coaches, and members of the FA have a right to be upset about being misrepresented and having their integrity attacked like this, legal action could be a dangerous escalation.
Argentina are far from the first nation to be criticised for their performance at a World Cup, or to be accused of benefitting from lenient decisions, or even to be accused of benefitting from favouritism from FIFA.
However, no nation in the past that has had these allegations aimed their way has resorted to taking legal action, considering that these narratives, while unfortunate and often irrational, are never taken seriously.
On top of that, it also creates more concern among fans online about what they post and how they post it when it comes to football, which could hurt how they engage with the sport going forward.
Hopefully, this is a situation that has arisen in the immediate aftermath of Argentina’s loss in the World Cup final, and cooler heads can eventually prevail.
