Universal has revealed that a bonkers live-action experience will debut as part of the HHN festivities this Halloween season, with Fortnitemares dialing in digital-inspired scares when the seasonal event kicks off in August.
Based on the massively popular Fortnite video gameʼs beloved Halloween event, the Fortnitemares scare zones coming to both Universal Studios Florida and Universal Studios Hollywood promise “ever-evolving and high-stakes environments” that guests will walk through atop existing park pathways, per a Universal synopsis.
As the Fortnite video game also features constantly shifting locales for players to traverse, the language used to describe the Fortnitemares scare zone indicates that it, too, will evolve throughout the experience. Though unconfirmed at this point, the wording recalls a prior Halloween Horror Nights experience, the 2011 scare zone called NightMaze, which saw scare actors pick up and move the boundaries of a maze-like scare zone to create a new path at different intervals throughout the event. Thus, the course would be different each time a guest would return to the area.
The Fortnitemares experience is confirmed, however, to include several familiar characters and aesthetic dressings from the video game, with guests entering Freaky Fields, the Halloween-centric “living battleground” that’s “overcome with a threatening force” all around.
From there, guests will encounter the iconic Battle Bus, as well as “new additions exclusive to Halloween Horror Nights” as they “work to escape and claim victory,” though more specific details on what guests will see in the scare zone have yet to be announced.
Universal is also working to roll out new Fortnitemares merchandise — from a graphic shirt, decal set, and an acrylic collectible piece — for the HHN scare zone’s debut.
Universal Halloween Horror Nights previously unveiled other exciting additions to the 2026 edition, including haunted houses based on intellectual properties like Stranger Things season 5, Evil Dead Burn, Hellraiser, and Ryan Coogler’s Oscar-winning 2025 horror opus Sinners.
The cult film Killer Klowns from Outer Space will also be represented at the Orlando edition via another scare zone adapted from the 1988 camp-horror classic.
Original houses not based on IP heading to the Orlando version of HHN include Cybergoria; H.R. Bloodengutz Presents: A Halloween Fright-Tacular!; Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control; Madlands: Caged Cannibals; and Invasion: Alien Abduction.
This year marks the 35th installment of the proper Halloween haunt event, which first debuted in a much smaller capacity at Universal Studios Hollywood for one year in 1986. The fleshed-out, more official HHN event as fans know it today began annual rollouts in 1991 at the Orlando park, with similar events later moving to Universal parks in Singapore and Japan each year as well.

Universal Halloween Horror Nights operates on select nights at Universal Orlando Resort beginning Friday, Aug. 28 through Sunday, Nov. 1 at the Orlando park, while the West Coast edition runs Thursday, Sept. 3 through Sunday, Nov. 1 in Hollywood.
