Lieu asks White House to send Trump ‘to every swing district in America’

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) on Tuesday sarcastically asked the White House to send President Trump to “every swing district” to campaign for House Republicans.

“I urge the White House to send Donald Trump to every single swing district in America,” Lieu, the vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus, said at a press conference. “He can explain to the American people in those districts why gas prices are up, why the cost of living is up.”

The California Democrat also criticized Trump for attending the final of the FIFA men’s World Cup in New Jersey on Sunday after three U.S. service members were killed in Iranian attacks on Jordan and Iraq in the 48 hours prior.

Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.), the chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said last week GOP lawmakers need Trump on the campaign trail to turn out voters in November.

“The left, when they’re out of power, they’re more motivated. We’ve got to drive up the motivation for our side. And part of that’s just communicating what’s at stake in this election. I’m not concerned that we can’t do that,” Hudson told NewsNation’s Mike Viqueira at the annual Hill Nation Summit

Trump’s average approval rating, however, is 40.8 percent as of Tuesday, according to a mean calculated by Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ). On Feb. 27, the day before the U.S. and Israel launched the war with Iran, the president’s DDHQ average approval rating was 43.3 percent.

The conflict has resulted in higher prices back home, as the Iranian military’s restrictions on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz have rocked the global oil trade.

The national average price of a gallon of regular gas is roughly $4.01 as of Tuesday, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).

That is an uptick of roughly eight cents relative to a month ago, days after Trump and Iranian officials signed a memorandum of understanding to pause hostilities — an agreement the two sides have abandoned amid the renewal of strikes over the last two weeks

Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), the chair of the House Democratic Caucus, also laid out Democrats’ agenda if they reclaim the gavel in the lower chamber in November.

“We want to fix healthcare, we want to lower the costs that people face and we want to end the corruption,” he said, during the same press conference Lieu spoke at. “That’s a pretty simple agenda. And then we’re also going to have a healthy amount of oversight and accountability, from every committee, on this administration.”
