11-year-old Brexton Busch won his first race since the death of his father, the legendary NASCAR driver Kyle Busch.
Busch, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, died on May 21 from bacterial pneumonia that progressed into severe sepsis. He was just 41. Just three days before his tragic passing, the man had celebrated his son’s 11th birthday.
This one was special. Brexton’s mom, and Busch’s widow Samantha, was overjoyed and heartbroken at the same time when the budding speedster climbed up his No.18 ServPro car, held the checkered flag and performed his dad’s signature bow.
Samantha saw a spitting image of her husband in little Brexton, who won the restricted micro sprint race at Oklahoma’s Port City Raceway despite starting 14th. She uploaded a few photos and videos of her son straight from the racetrack and uploaded them on Instagram.
Captioning the photos, Samantha wrote,
“First win since losing Kyle. I’ve never felt so proud and so heartbroken at the same time. Brexton continues to amaze me with his determination, his resilience, the way he keeps showing up to do what he loves even while carrying so much at such a young age. Watching him celebrate all I could think about was Kyle.”
Brexton also reflected on what this win meant for him. He took to Instagram and wrote,
“My first win since my dad passed. I don’t like to talk about it much, but the last two months have been really tough. I’m missing my crew chief, my driver coach, my dad, the guy who I looked up to more [than] anyone.”
Safe to say that Kyle Busch’s legacy lives on. Shortly after his death, Richard Childress Racing said that it would reserve the No. 8 number for Brexton until he is ready to compete at the Cup level.
Busch’s car was renumbered to 33 and given to Austin Hill to drive for the remainder of the season.

When Kyle Busch died, Samantha lost her best friend, and the love of her life. She is shattered beyond words, and on most days, she just feels like curling up into a ball and crying.
But Samantha is a mom. Parenthood doesn’t end with grief, and that’s why she keeps going. She keeps pushing through the pain for her kids, even though on most days, she feels that her world has fallen apart.
In a heartfelt post, Samantha expressed her feelings, saying,
“When your children are hurting, something inside of you just takes over. You get up early, have a good cry, and then go make the pancakes. You answer the questions the best you can when you still have so many of your own. You smile for them when you’re in physical pain because you miss him so much.”
“You do everything you can so they can keep being kids and not carry the full weight of all this. As a mom, all you want is for your children to feel safe, loved, and protected, even when your own world has fallen apart. They are the reason I keep putting one foot in front of the other. For Brexton. For Lennix. For him.”
Samantha lost her grandpa, whom she called her “Nonno”, only two months after the death of her husband. It’s indeed a rough stretch for the Busch family.
