Actor Kwak Dong Yeon will begin his mandatory military service this August, shortly after gaining attention from global viewers through his special appearance in Netflix's "The East Palace."
The actor will enter the Army as an active-duty soldier on August 25 and is expected to complete his service in February 2028.
His agency THEBLACKLABEL announced on July 21 KST that Kwak Dong Yeon will quietly enter the army training center without holding a separate enlistment event. After finishing basic military training, he will be assigned to his unit and continue his duties as a soldier.
"The actor will faithfully fulfill his national defense duties through active-duty military service," the agency said.
Kwak Dong Yeon's enlistment comes after a busy period in his acting career. Before beginning his military service, he appeared in Netflix's original series "The East Palace," which premiered on July 17, ChosunBiz reported.
In the dark fantasy historical drama, he played the Crown Prince, a character connected to the mystery surrounding the repeated deaths of royal heirs. Although his role was a special appearance, Kwak Dong Yeon left a strong impression on viewers with his performance. The series also gained attention for combining Korean folklore, supernatural elements, and palace mysteries.
Kwak Dong Yeon to Leave Variety Show
The actor's upcoming military schedule will also affect some of his entertainment activities. He will reportedly not join the second season of tvN's variety show "The Village Barber," where he previously appeared with Park Bo Gum and Lee Sang Yi. Actor Go Kyung Pyo will take his place in the new season.
According to AllKPop, Kwak Dong Yeon began his acting career in 2012 through the KBS2 drama "My Husband Got a Family." Originally training as a singer, he later focused on acting and gradually built a reputation as a versatile performer.
His breakthrough came in 2016 when he played Kim Byung Yeon in the popular historical drama "Love in the Moonlight." He continued to expand his range with roles in "Gangnam Beauty," "My Strange Hero," "Vincenzo," and "Big Mouth."
In 2024, he gained widespread popularity as Hong Soo Cheol in tvN's hit drama "Queen of Tears." His portrayal of a character who grew from an immature heir into a more mature and emotional figure earned praise from viewers.
Before enlistment, Kwak Dong Yeon is also expected to reunite with the cast of "Love in the Moonlight" for a special program celebrating the drama's 10th anniversary. The reunion will include Park Bo Gum, Kim Yoo Jung, Jinyoung, Chae Soo Bin, and Kwak Dong Yeon.
