Kremlin says there is no progress in dialogue on ending war in Ukraine

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said there is no new progress in the dialogue on ending the war in Ukraine, following a meeting between Russian and US representatives in the Philippines.

Quote: "I would refrain from indulging in excessive optimism here. Contacts are indeed taking place, and that is always a positive sign – but it is too soon to speak of any new momentum or acceleration."

Details: Responding to a question about accelerating "the Ukrainian settlement" in the context of the recent meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Manila, Peskov denied there were any changes.

Commenting on a possible meeting between the Russian and US leaders, Peskov said dialogue with the American side is continuing "through existing working channels" and expressed hope that any further discussions would continue in Moscow.

Background:

・Marco Rubio said after the meeting in Manila that he had discussed the need to end the war against Ukraine at a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in the Philippines.

・Rubio also said that "new ideas" are needed to achieve peace in the Russia-Ukraine war in order to break the deadlock in negotiations, as the proposals put forward so far were "not acceptable to Ukraine at the time".

・According to Russia's Foreign Ministry, Lavrov briefed Rubio on the "real" state of affairs in the Russia-Ukraine war and stated that further arms supplies to Ukraine are "unacceptable".

・In June, Rubio said no agreements on Ukraine had been reached during last year's summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian ruler Vladimir Putin.

・This followed accusations from Lavrov and Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov that the US had betrayed the so-called "spirit of Anchorage". Lavrov further claimed that Washington's actions showed it is abandoning its role as an objective mediator in settling the Russia-Ukraine war.
