Kimora Lee Simmons nearly gave up her custody rights to her estranged husband, Tim Leissner.
The former couple tied the knot in 2014 and welcomed a son named Wolfe a year after their marriage. They reportedly separated in 2022, but some sources say their union ended in 2020.
Years after their separation, Tim Leissner finally filed for divorce before his incarceration in February 2026. Kimora Lee Simmons recently responded to the petition but made a grave error while checking the boxes under the custody section.
News broke on Tuesday, July 21, that the reality TV star, now legally known as Kimora Lee, had given up primary custody of Wolfe to Tim. The shocking move naturally shocked many, as the entertainer has always flaunted her status as a proud mom of five kids.
Turns out she never planned on giving up her custody rights, with a source clearing the air hours after the news made waves in the media. The source claimed the situation was a mistake, noting it was a clerical error as Kimora continues to enjoy life as Wolfe’s primary caretaker.
The source, per TMZ, stressed that Kimora has enjoyed having full custody of her son since her 2020 separation from Tim and had no plans on giving up these rights. Additionally, her ex having primary custody of Wolfe wouldn’t work, given his current incarceration for his role in the 1MDB bribery scandal.
Inside The TV Personality’s Divorce Response
The custody error occurred when Kimora filed her response to Tim’s divorce petition. The Blast covered the story, reporting that she had ticked the box that gave primary legal and physical custody of her son to her estranged husband.
The shocking move clashed with Tim’s initial request, which was joint physical and legal custody of Wolfe. The disagreements continued, with Kimora requesting for her former spouse’s rights to spousal support be terminated, asking the court not to award him any.
She asked for spousal support to be granted solely to her and requested that Tim cover all the legal expenses stemming from their divorce process. Her estranged husband asked for the opposite, demanding spousal support and for Kimora to cover his legal bills.
The Former Couple’s Marriage Ended On A Sour Note
Kimora’s romance with Tim made waves in 2014 when they were outed for secretly tying the knot by the model’s first ex-husband, Russell Simmons. They welcomed their son Wolfe a year later and also adopted a son named Gary, making the entertainer the proud mom of five kids.
Everything seemed to be going well for the lovebirds until 2020, when Tim was accused of infidelity. The rumors began after he was spotted with an unidentified woman in Los Angeles, per Nicki Swift, with the tensions escalating in 2022 amid Tim’s 1MDB bribery scandal.
The case forced Tim to confess in February 2022 that he had faked his divorce from his ex-wife to marry Kimora. He revealed he played a years-long charade where he posed as his ex-wife in emails to convince the TV personality he was separated. Tim is currently incarcerated, ending up in prison just after his divorce filing.
The ‘Kimora: Back In The Fab Lane’ Star’s Home Was Dragged Into Her Estranged Husband’s Case
Months after Tim began serving his prison sentence, The Blast reported in April that his estranged wife had been implicated in the scandal. The drama involved her Beverly Hills mansion, where she had been living rent-free, and was allegedly refusing to vacate the premises.
The property was dragged into the scandal as it was allegedly purchased through the funds Tim stole from 1MDB. The Malaysian sovereign wealth fund was at the heart of one of the world’s largest multibillion-dollar frauds in history. Tim’s involvement in the scam had earned him a two-year prison sentence.
As for Kimora, she and Tim were reportedly meant to pay $67,000 a month to continue living on the Beverly Hills property. However, those payments were never made, with the ownership of the home under dispute. The entertainer accused her ex of fraudulently selling the home in 2020 without authorization.
Kimora Lee Simmons Was Sued By Her First Ex-Husband
Before her drama with Tim, Kimora was first married to Def Jam Recordings’ co-founder, Russell. They tied the knot in 1998 despite a 31-year age gap and welcomed two daughters before their 2006 separation. Their divorce was finalized by January 2009, with troubles following years later.
In 2021, PEOPLE reported that Russell had sued Kimora and Tim for allegedly conspiring to transfer his shares in the energy drink company, Celsius. He claimed they fraudulently took nearly 4 million shares in order to pay Tim’s legal and bail fees stemming from the 1MDB bribery case.
The record executive explained in the complaint that he tried and failed to resolve the situation amicably with the parties involved before turning to the law for justice. Russell accused Kimora and Tim of aiding and abetting each other to commit fraud, which he didn’t learn of until July 2019.
