An average Monday in the superhero world has swiftly turned out to be anything but, thanks to Marvel Studios. The unexpected unveiling of the official Avengers: Doomsday trailer is carrying headlines, and rightfully so, but not to be forgotten (as if it ever could be) is Tom Holland's fourth MCU feature film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day — a movie set to change things forever for Holland's Peter Parker.
Exactly how so will soon be known in its entirety when Marvel Studios delivers the upcoming blockbuster, and eventual record-setter, to box offices on July 31, but one of their top bosses is already giving keen insight into at least one major difference from the previous three Spider-Man films led by Holland.
Tom Holland's MCU Spider-Man Finally Invokes a Canon Trait
Kevin Feige, president and executive producer (and CEO) of Marvel Studios, says the decision to finally put Holland into a film full of street-level battles was intentional and, as such, there's something else he'll be doing for the first time (more on the other thing in a moment).
“We spent our first three MCU Spidey movies really focusing on the fact that he was in this shared universe, because there had been five Spidey movies that couldn’t explore that before." Feige said during a Spider-Man: Brand New Day attended by CBR's Sean O'Connell. "One of the things that makes this a brand new day is [that] this really focused on Peter in New York."
He continued: "We even avoided him swinging through the canyons of New York forever in those early movies because it had been done quite a bit. Right now, it has been 10 years since we have done it, so it's exciting again! There have been great things in the video games that have upped the level of action that [director Daniel Destin Cretton] has matched and surpassed.”
Though there's still a part of Spider-Man canon blatantly altered by The Russo Bros., more and more elements of the original character are showing up for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Tom Holland Gets Two Key Spider-Man Traits in Brand New Day
Feige isn't wrong here, and it's something that many haven't really caught onto when it comes to Holland's MCU web crawler.
Ever since the events of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Parker has been different than both Tobey Maguire's and Andrew Garfield's versions of the character. A large part of that reason was, as Feige describes, because Holland needed to be tied into the multiverse for the upcoming extinction level event known as Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
But as he comes of age and fully into his powers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Holland will not only give the people what they want from their Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man — some good ole' fashioned web swinging through NYC — but also the fact he'll be able to finally shoot webs organically from his body; and no longer need web shooters.
Street level justice included, it all brings Holland as close as Spider-Man canon as he's ever been, and helps set the tone for what will likely be his best and most poignant portrayal of the character ever.
