The Gray House season 2 gets a new update.
Executive produced by Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman, the Prime Video Western series premiered back in February, chronicling the efforts of four women to turn Underground Railroad operatives into spies during the Civil War. Following a climactic ending to The Gray House season 1, news has yet to arrive regarding a potential season 2.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan for President Curtis, The Gray House star Keith David, who plays Henry H. Garnet, reveals that he is hopeful about a potential season 2. Though he doesn't have any inside info regarding the show's possible return, he shares that other historical secrets provide fertile ground for new storylines. As David says:
Wow. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? Because, again, there’s a lot to unpack. The thing about the revelation of American history—the stuff that we don’t know and haven’t been privy to—there’s so much of that. It would be a wonderful palette, something to explore. I would love to see what that looks like and where it could go.
Prime Video doesn't release viewership figures, but it will be these numbers that determine whether The Gray House returns for another season. There's reason to believe the show was popular, however, as it was featured in the streamer's top 10 for multiple consecutive weeks.
Critically, the response to the Western series was something of a mixed bag. On Rotten Tomatoes, The Gray House has only a 42% critics' score. Broadly, reviews take issue with the show's inaccurate history and writing that fails to adequately explore the efforts of its female leads. The audience-driven Popcornmeter score for The Gray House is higher at 68%, but this still isn't a particularly glowing score.
Starring Mary-Louise Parker, Daisy Head, Amethyst Davis, Hannah James, Paul Anderson, Ian Duff, and Christopher McDonald, among others, The Gray House consists of eight episodes. Working against a potential renewal is the fact that the show was largely positioned as a miniseries, with the episodes essentially concluding the tale about historical figures like Eliza Van Lew, Elizabeth Van Lew, and Mary Jane Richards.
For Costner, The Gray House arrived on the heels of several high-profile Western projects. Costner made a dramatic exit from the now-concluded Yellowstone in 2024, and the Prime Video series also follows the release of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024).
The first Horizon movie was intended to be the first of a four-part Western epic that features Costner as writer, director, producer, and star, but the film fell flat at the box office. Though Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 has been shot and premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2024, it still doesn't have a release date, and Costner continues to struggle to finance his planned chapters 3 and 4.
It's unclear whether The Gray House will get a renewal for season 2, but it does seem like a series that may be a one-and-done. If another season does happen, however, David evidently thinks there's plenty to explore in additional episodes.
