Kate Middleton is basically classiness incarnate, no matter what she’s wearing. Sometimes it’s a velvet gown, other times it’s a perfectly tailored suit, and, most recently, it’s a pair of athletic shorts. Yep, this week, the Princess of Wales took to Instagram to share a photo from a hike supporting The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, in which she wore red Summit Series Pacesetter Shorts from The North Face. As soon as I saw them, I knew I needed a similar pair.
Athletic shorts are secretly one of the most versatile pieces you can own. They’re just as suited for sporty activities as they are for It Girl outfits, à la Hailey Bieber, who has styled the trend more than once. My hunt for a Middleton-inspired pair landed me on Amazon, where I found other North Face shorts, plus lookalikes for both hers and Bieber’s.
The North Face Aphrodite Arise Shorts
Middleton opted for The North Face shorts, and while Amazon doesn’t carry her exact pair, this similar pick from the brand brings on that same quality and smart design. They’re moisture-wicking, which is a huge plus whether you’re hiking or spending a humid day in the park, and the wide elastic waistband with a drawstring makes them easy to adjust to your perfect fit. Wear these with a white tank, gold hoops, and your favorite sneakers for all the It Girl vibes.
Under Armour Fly By Shorts
“They’re very flattering, a great length, and perfect for exercise or just every day. I would have 20 of these if I could,” one shopper said of the Under Armour Fly By Shorts. They come in 15 colors, so there’s a shade for every aesthetic. Since I was inspired by Middleton, however, I’m obviously picking up the above bright red pair.

This pair is so flattering and easy to wear with shorter tops or sports bras, offering a little more coverage while still keeping things cool and comfortable. They’re also Amazon’s number one best-selling athletic shorts, with more than 9,000 five-star ratings to back up the hype. As one shopper wrote, “The high-waisted fit is supportive without feeling restrictive, and they stay in place beautifully whether working out, walking, traveling, or just running errands.”
Plameil Three-Stripe Track Shorts
These shorts have a Y2K feel that I can’t get enough of, especially in this light blue and navy colorway. They’re exactly the kind of bottoms I’d style to feel a little more elevated, pairing them with a fitted black T-shirt, an open white button-down, and ballet flats.
Hde Dolphin Side-Stripe Running Shorts
You can’t go wrong with this classic side-stripe style, which is the spitting image of a pair Bieber wore recently. “These are honestly comfortable enough that I slept in them, but they’re good quality and can be worn outside,” one shopper wrote. I’d even pair these shorts with a babydoll blouse, though they’d also look cute with slim sneakers and a collared tee.

Finding Nike shorts for under $30 is no small feat, which is why I’m so excited about this pair. “The material feels durable, lightweight, and built to last through workouts and everyday wear,” one shopper wrote. “They hold up great after washing and keep their shape without fading or pilling.” Solid black is always a go-to, but the black-and-pink colorway is hard to resist.
