Wedding planning is ramping up for Jutta Leerdam and Jake Paul.

While chatting with PEOPLE at Sports Illustrated’s Beyond the Pitch event in New York City on Saturday, July 18, Leerdam, 27, revealed their wedding must-have ahead of their big day: “Have fun and dance.”

The soon-to-be bride and groom made their romance Instagram official in April 2023 and announced their engagement in March 2025. Leerdam tells PEOPLE that the secret to their relationship is mutual support and quality time together.

“I think just having fun, doing a lot of date nights, supporting each other in each other’s dreams,” says Leerdam, who notes that her “favorite” and “best date” Paul has ever planned was their engagement.

The professional boxer popped the question on bended knee atop a bed of white rose petals at Jade Mountain, a luxury beachfront estate in Saint Lucia. He announced their engagement news in a joint post on Instagram on March 22, 2025, writing, “We’re engaged💍🕊️🤍we can’t wait to spend forever together🥹.”

“He planned it really well, and it was an amazing, magical experience, and he’s very good at date nights and planning romantic things, so I’m very lucky,” Leerdam tells PEOPLE.

Reflecting on the proposal to PEOPLE just a few days after announcing the engagement news, Paul admitted that he was “very nervous” to pop the question. He said, “I was very nervous for the engagement, way more nervous than any of my fights, so it was all choked up and she makes me nervous, I guess.”

Leerdam added, “I didn’t know my parents were going to be there, so that was the biggest surprise ever. I was in shock, but it was the best day of my life, really.”

At the time, the Olympic speed skater told PEOPLE that they would focus on wedding planning after the 2026 Winter Olympics. She shared, “I first want to work towards the Olympics, get everything out of there, and of course I’m going for that Olympic gold. And then after, yeah, I can start planning. So the wedding will probably be the summer after.”

Despite crashing out during the December 2025 Olympic trials and leaving the rink in tears, Leerdam still made it to the 2026 Winter Olympics, where she won a gold medal and broke the record for speed skating all in one swoop.
