Jürgen Klopp is already putting together a familiar and trusted coaching staff for his new challenge with Germany, and the latest addition brings an important connection to one of the most successful periods of his career.
In addition to his long-time assistants Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders, Klopp is set to add former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sven Bender to his Germany staff as one of his assistants per Sport Bild’s Christian Falk (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
The appointment makes plenty of sense. Klopp and Bender worked together for six years at Dortmund, giving the new Germany head coach the opportunity to bring in someone who already understands his football, his personality and his demands from their time together at club level.
Bender was a key figure during Klopp’s successful Dortmund era, and his experience as a player at the highest level could now translate into an important role on the coaching staff. Having someone who knows the manager so well can be particularly valuable in an international environment, where preparation time is limited and relationships need to develop quickly.
For Klopp, the staff is beginning to take shape around a blend of trusted lieutenants and familiar voices. Krawietz and Lijnders have been central figures throughout his coaching career, while Bender adds a direct link to the Dortmund years.
The reunion could be a fascinating one. Klopp is returning to German football in a completely different role, but he will now have several people around him who understand exactly how he works.
And for Bender, this represents an exciting opportunity to begin the next chapter of his football career alongside the coach who helped shape the most important years of his playing career.
