Jim Nagy reveals 'biggest surprise' since joining Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Sooners are navigating the NIL and transfer portal era by embracing a professional-style approach, building an NFL-inspired front structure with a general manager and dedicated scouting department. However, one of the biggest challenges of this new era has been managing the complexities that come with NIL.

With revenue sharing becoming a larger part of college football, players now have more direct insight into their financial value. The challenge for programs is that players now openly discuss compensation, creating another dynamic coaches and administrators must manage inside the locker room.

That was one of the biggest surprises for Oklahoma general manager Jim Nagy when he entered this new role. Coming from an era where salaries and compensation were rarely discussed publicly, Nagy admitted he did not expect players to be as open about their earnings. Because of that shift, establishing a strong culture has become more important than ever to prevent financial differences from creating division within a team.

"The biggest surprise, I would say... is just like probably went in naive to how much the players share their rev share and what they're being paid," Nagy said to On3's J.D. PicKell. "... I always have to be mindful of the culture that's been built... the standard has been set."

The NIL era has created challenges that college football has never experienced before. Managing money, expectations and team chemistry is now just as important as recruiting talent and developing players.

For Oklahoma, the answer has been building a strong culture and finding players who believe in the program's standards. In this new era, talent may get you to the top, but culture could determine whether you stay there.
