Jessica Chastain is making an unnerving return to horror in her new movie.
On Tuesday, July 21, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse released a trailer for Chastain’s new film Other Mommy, in which she takes on dual roles as Ursula, a young girl named Bela’s (Arabella Olivia Clark) mother, and as some sort of paranormal entity who has invaded their home and taken on Ursula’s likeness.
In the trailer, the entity — who the daughter refers to as “Other Mommy” — cooks pasta for Bela, who notes that “Other Mommy” is not supposed to leave her room. When Ursula’s husband (Jay Duplass) enters the kitchen to check on her, he discovers the being under the kitchen table, with her limbs folded around her like a spider, and is appropriately scared.
As the trailer shows, Bela explains to Ursula that the doppelgänger lives in their home and claims she is nice. “Other Mommy”’s frights, though, seem anything but.
An official synopsis for the movie describes Other Mommy as “a terrifying trip into the darkening world of a young girl, Bela, who forms a relationship with a sinister entity in her home who looks uncannily like her own mother.”
Chastain was first connected to Other Mommy when Deadline reported she would star in director Rob Savage’s adaptation of the 2025 novel Incidents Around the House back in April 2025.
The Academy Award-winning actress has previously forayed into horror movies with performances in 2013’s Mama and 2019’s It: Chapter Two. Since 2022, when Chastain won an Oscar for her performance in 2021’s The Eyes of Tammy Faye, she has largely appeared in dramatic films and television series, including The Good Nurse, George & Tammy, Memory, Mothers’ Instinct and last year’s Dreams.
Other Mommy’s supporting cast also includes Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed and Karen Allen. Director Savage, 34, most recently released the 2023 horror movie The Boogeyman.
Chastain has a number of projects in the works or set for release soon. In April, Variety reported that Chastain’s Apple TV series The Savant would release this month after the series was previously postponed indefinitely back in September 2025. However, Apple TV has not shared any updates or an upcoming release date.
