The Utah Jazz have high expectations for No. 2 overall pick Darryn Peterson entering the 2026-27 season, and former NBA forward PJ Tucker believes the rookie is in an ideal position to contend for Rookie of the Year.
Speaking during an appearance at Fanatics Fest NYC, Tucker predicted Peterson will make an immediate offensive impact because of the role Utah is expected to give the 19-year-old from opening night.
“Instantly… 20 [points] out of the gate,” Tucker said. “Because he’s going to get all reps, he’s gonna initiate all plays. Most plays will be drawn up for him. He’s going to be going… they gonna let him off the leash and just let him hoop.”

Peterson entered the NBA as one of the most highly touted prospects in the 2026 draft class after establishing himself as an elite scorer and playmaker. The Jazz selected him with the second overall pick, viewing him as a cornerstone of the franchise’s future.

Tucker’s comments reflect the opportunity Peterson is expected to receive in Utah’s offense. With the Jazz committed to developing their young backcourt, the rookie is projected to handle the ball frequently and serve as one of the focal points of the team’s attack from the start of the season.
Utah will enter next season with a revamped roster after making several significant moves over the past year. The Jazz acquired former Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson Jr. in a blockbuster trade at the deadline and later added veteran depth by signing Jaxson Hayes, Mo Bamba and Josh Okogie while re-signing Jusuf Nurkic. Although the team lost Walker Kessler in a sign-and-trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, Utah received multiple future first-round assets that strengthened its long-term outlook.
With Peterson expected to receive every opportunity to lead the offense alongside Jackson, Tucker believes the rookie has the workload and freedom needed to put together a Rookie of the Year-caliber campaign.
