Florida football head coach Jon Sumrall became outspoken about certain items already. Notably changes to the NCAA academic calendar. But Wednesday saw another reason for Sumrall to raise his voice: an abrupt cell phone call during SEC media days.

Sumrall showed a visibly upset and blunt side when he heard the ringing. Here’s what the first-year Gators coach said next.

“You would have been thrown out of our team meeting. You’re lucky I’m not going to throw this freaking podium,” Sumrall told the photographer.

Although Sumrall drew laughs from the reporters after he made that quip. He also didn’t want to call out the media representative by name.

Sumrall didn’t just playfully rant about the abrupt ringing. He became serious about the topic of a nine-game SEC schedule.

“I wasn’t in the room when that conversation was had,” Sumrall began. “We’re going to play anybody anywhere anytime. I’m not going to whine and complain about being an SEC head football coach.”

Sumrall receives new, more demanding tests like never before compared to his previous coaching stops. He won with minimal resources at Troy University, going 23-4 overall. He later went 20-8 with Tulane in making the jump from the Sun Belt Conference to the American Athletic Conference. Now he’s taking on the fierce SEC gauntlet.

All while aiming to resuscitate a championship starved program that hasn’t won a national title since the 2008 season. Florida also has taken a backseat to other SEC powers in recent years like Georgia, Alabama, and now more recently Texas A&M and Oklahoma. So Sumrall aims to reinstall championship euphoria in Gainesville.
