The Stath faces the biggest threat of his hard-hitting action hero career.

Action movie favorite Jason Statham faces off with the biggest threat of his hard-hitting career in this 116-minute action thriller epic that's officially one of the biggest hits on streaming. Making a splash on the popular platform, Netflix, the action outing injects a hefty dose of science fiction into proceedings as The Stath finds his trusty fists prove useless against a beast far beyond anything he's faced before. Yes, even The Rock.

The Stath Finds Himself in the Middle of a Monster Mash

Rather than throwing down with assassins, criminals, or corrupt cops, Jason Statham instead dives down into the depths to do battle with a megalodon in the hugely successful sci-fi action sequel Meg 2: The Trench. Directed by Ben Wheatley, and with Statham this time being joined by fellow action star Wu Jing as well as Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, and Cliff Curtis, Meg 2 takes the first outing's wild premise and cranks things up by adding more monster mash-up madness.

Statham fights to survive against not just the giant shark but also giant squids and reptilian beasts, even sporting a mech suit at one point, as Meg 2 combines throwback B-movie sci-fi with the kind of action Statham fans know and love. And it's a unique effort that audiences appreciated, with the movie grossing a worldwide total of $397.8 million against a $129 million budget, alongside 72% on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter. Much like the first outing, Meg 2 was met with a "rotten" score from critics, but perhaps they simply couldn't handle the sheer level of sci-fi action bedlam on display.

Thankfully, audiences very much can, with Meg 2: The Trench now officially one of the biggest streaming hits on Netflix, according to Tudum. In just one week, the Statham sequel has climbed to #5 in the week's top 10, accruing 3,600,000 views.

'Meg 3' Isn't Happening (Yet) but Statham Will Set Sail Once Again in 'Mutiny'

While not quite as big a box office hit as its $529 million predecessor, Meg 2: The Trench made more than enough waves to justify a third installment. With six main "Meg" novels by author Steve Alten to mine from, we could be sitting down to watch The Stath battle prehistoric beasts for years to come. While nothing has yet been confirmed, Meg 2 director Ben Wheatley has stated that he would love to return for more.

Until then, Jason Statham takes to the high seas once again in next month's action thriller Mutiny, which is due to be released on August 21, 2026.
