Jaguars veteran may not survive the pressure building behind him

The Jacksonville Jaguars could hold several position battles in training camp. Some of them will carry more weight than others, but all of them will be intriguing. In particular, the one at cornerback will be a must-watch.

Jarrian Jones, Travis Hunter, Jourdan Lewis, and Montaric Brown are virtually locks to make the team, but the CB5 spot remains up for grabs. Christian Braswell may have a leg up because he's been with the Jags since 2023. However, he'll need to fend off the ascending sophomore Jabbar Muhammad and rookies Preston Hodge and Devon Marshall.

What has Christian Braswell done with the Jaguars

Christian Braswell was a sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft. He didn't log any playing time as a rookie but has seen an uptick in snaps each of the past two years. Just last year, the former Rutgers Scarlet Knight played 160 snaps, most of them in the boundaries. Moreover, he fared well, giving up a 52 percent completion rate in 23 targets. That's a promising outing in a limited sample.

That said, Braswell is far from guaranteed a roster spot. He struggled in the offseason program while second-year cornerback Jabbar Muhammad turned heads.

Muhammad went undrafted in 2025. He spent his rookie campaign on the practice squad but has shown substantial improvement from last year. The former Oregon Duck now appears to be in the front seat to earn the CB5 job ahead of training camp. When you factor in that undrafted rookies Preston Hodge and Devon Marshall are also making a bid for a roster spot, Muhammad may not get the nod. Then again, context is key.

Whereas Braswell generally went against the starters, Muhammad and the rookies practiced with the second and third teams. If they want to move up the depth chart, they'll need to stand out when the pads are on.

Christian Braswell may not make the Jaguars 53-man roster

It's hard to tell just how things will play out. Christian Braswell is one of the few players from the Trent Baalke era who remain on the roster, and there are two ways to look at it. The fact that he's stuck around despite the fact that Baalke is gone may be a sign that the new regime values him.

On the other hand, general manager James Gladstone has brougth in players who fit his philosophy better. This could make Braswell the odd man out, especially when you take into account that Jabbar Muhammad, Preston Hodge, and Devon Marshall might have a bigger ceiling.

In the end, though, the competition for the CB5 job may not rank high among the Jaguars' position battles, but it's most definitely worth monitoring when the Jaguars show up to training camp.
