England have suffered an injury setback ahead of a busy home summer, with one of their brightest young stars forced to miss the entire The Hundred Men’s 2026 campaign. The development comes just weeks before England begin their highly anticipated Test series against Pakistan, raising concerns over the all-rounder’s availability.

Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of The Hundred Men’s 2026 after sustaining a right knee injury during England’s recently concluded ODI series against India. However, the injury has brought an abrupt end to those plans, forcing the franchise into a late leadership change ahead of the tournament.

Jacob Bethell ruled out of The Hundred Men’s 2026

Bethell had been expected to play a leading role for Birmingham Phoenix after being retained ahead of the inaugural player auction and appointed captain. The injury was confirmed following an MRI scan, after which the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that the all-rounder will begin his rehabilitation. The board has not provided a timeline for his return, leaving his availability for England’s upcoming Test series against Pakistan, beginning on August 19, in doubt.

The injury is a significant setback for Birmingham Phoenix, who had retained Bethell for GBP 340,000 ahead of the player auction and appointed him captain for the new season. Following his withdrawal, the franchise has named South Africa’s Donovan Ferreira as the new captain.

Bethell’s impressive form cut short by untimely injury

Bethell’s absence comes at a time when he had started to rediscover his best form after recovering from a finger injury earlier in the summer. During England’s white-ball series against India, he played a match-winning unbeaten 76 in the second T20I before scoring a brilliant 91 in the ODI series decider, a performance that earned him the Player of the Match award. He also chipped in with a wicket in that contest.

Widely regarded as one of England’s brightest young talents and a future leadership candidate, Bethell will now focus on his rehabilitation with the hope of returning to full fitness as soon as possible. His injury is a major blow for both Birmingham Phoenix and England, who could be without one of their most promising all-rounders during an important phase of the international season.
