Police officers in Irvine shot and killed a man who they said charged at them with a knife while experiencing a mental health crisis.
The department received a call around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday from a man who said he was experiencing a mental health crisis and was armed with a knife outside his home, according to the Irvine Police Department. The Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the scene and found the man near the intersection of Sungate and Silkwood.
Negotiation attempts were made for about an hour before the man charged at officers with the knife in hand, according to police. In response, officers shot at the man, striking him.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died of his injuries.
Police have not released the name of the man, but described him as a 20-year-old Irvine resident.
