The new iPhone operating system could come with upgraded notifications.

The updated Apple operating system that will be released later this year will have a notification feature that many users have been eagerly anticipating.

According to Reddit user AlxR25, posting on the r/iPhone forum, custom notification sounds will soon be available on apps, even when they aren’t supported by Apple’s infrastructure.

“On iOS 27 Beta Apple revamped the shortcuts app and added new automation triggers such as ‘when I receive a notification,'” the original poster (OP) wrote.

“If you mute notification sounds from a certain app that doesn’t let users change the default sound (i.e. Instagram) you can go ahead and set an automation to play any downloaded sound.

“This can also be useful if you want per-app notification customization. For example you can set Reddit to use a different sound than the system default.”

‘Golden prison’

Commenters on the post were largely happy about the update, although many felt it was too long coming.

“It’s crazy that in 2026, Apple still doesn’t allow users to just change the notification sound in the notification settings of each app,” one critic observed.

“Someone said that Apple is [a] golden prison and it stuck with me,” another pundit offered.

An individual pointed out that the new update was, “unfortunately not useful when device is silenced, because there’s no vibration customization.”

However, one poster asked if iPhones can use notification text in shortcuts—a useful trick that could allow the user the see if notifications contain a keyword.

“Yes, you can add filters to the notification trigger, and pass the notification title subtitle and message as variables on something like an ‘if’ statement,” the OP replied.

“Amazing!” the poster replied, “This is so nice. Thank you for testing.”

More iPhone Coverage

Newsweek has covered a number of iPhone and iOS updates.

Apple is expected to release a foldable iPhone later this year, according to reports that say the new design could drop as early as September.

Apple also reportedly hopes to boost the battery life of its devices before iOS 27 drops for the general public in September, especially after users complained that devices weren’t lasting as long as they hoped.

Finally, Apple is unlikely to make changes to one feature in particular despite its lack of popularity among users: The Liquid Glass user interface, which many iPhone users have complained affects both usability and battery life.
