This summer, Ina Garten has been busy showing off all the features she’s added to her East Hampton garden. We’ve been obsessing over her arched trellis garden feature for weeks—and now, we’re dreaming of incorporating her serene shade garden into our own backyards.
Garten posted a walking tour of her shade garden on Instagram, and her followers were amazed at how beautiful it looks. The enchanted garden features cascading flowers, lush trees, and soothing water features. As one commenter put it: “How peaceful is that?”
All the Plants We Spotted in Ina Garten’s Beautiful Shade Garden
Garten’s shade garden features a gravel walking path, which is primarily lined with lush green ostrich ferns. These tall, wide-leafed ferns give Garten’s path lots of definition. They also thrive in shady areas, making them a good choice for any shade garden.
Continuing deeper into the garden, Garten’s ostrich ferns give way to thriving hostas. As lilies, these plants sprout large, pointy leaves with plenty of texture. They do well in lots of shade and are hardy in planting zones 3 to 9—in the summer, they can sprout tall, bell-shaped flowers.
Along a garden wall grows a plot of goatsbeard. Named for its huge, feathery flowers, these plants turn Garten’s yard into a fairy meadow. She primarily places them in areas of the shade garden that get the most sunlight, so that their white flowers almost appear to glow. You’ll also find them scattered between ferns and hostas, to add variation to the landscape. Their cascading flowers will continue to appear from May through July.
Towering above the landscape and providing dappled shade are what look like large crape myrtles. Their thin trunks split into dozens of branches, offering wide spots of shade throughout the garden. These trees can sprout vibrant pink, purple, or white flowers in the summer.
The entire garden is enclosed with stone walls (covered in creeping vines, of course) and tall hedges. This not only adds extra shade, but also makes the space feel more private and secluded.
Other Features in Ina Garten’s Shade Garden
A shade garden is meant to be a place to cool off and relax, so naturally, Garten’s yard features several spots to sit and take in the scenery. These places appear right along the main path; the gravel widens out into large circles to make room for seating spaces.
One such spot features a circular outdoor table and four chairs. It’s surrounded by plants and trees, so that no matter where you sit, you’re privy to a beautiful view. Another seating area places two chairs in front of a bowl-shaped water fountain, surrounded by trees and hedges. “Perfect water feature,” commended one commenter; “simple and elegant.”
