Daniel Radcliffe Voices the Prince In Netflix's Steps
Scheduled to release on November 20, 2026, Steps, an animated musical fantasy comedy directed by Alyce Tzue (Soar) and co-directed by John Ripa (Raya and the Last Dragon), will be loosely based on the Cinderella fairy tale from an idea by comedy folk music duo Garfunkel and Oates, actors Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci. Shifting the focus away from Cinderella, who will be voiced by Amanda Seyfried, Steps instead puts one of the misunderstood step-sisters into the spotlight.
Steps will follow Lilith (Ali Wong), who inadvertently transforms her sister Margot (Stephanie Hsu) into a frog, allowing a ruthless schemer named Priscilla (Nikki Glaser) to seize the kingdom's throne. Lilith and Margot form an unexpected alliance with Cinderella to try and save their kingdom, which will be fleshed out with other fantasy-inspired characters. Alongside the iconic Fairy Godmother (Bette Midler), the Prince himself will be involved in the story, and will be voiced by none other than Daniel Radcliffe.
As the Prince, Steps' version of the legendary Prince Charming character, Daniel Radcliffe takes over from some brilliant performers who have taken on this role. Rupert Everett voiced Prince Charming in Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third, James Marsden took on the role of Prince Edward in Enchanted, and Josh Dallas portrayed the character in Once Upon a Time. There may be no character more equipped and qualified to bring Daniel Radcliffe back to the fantasy genre after 15 years.
Daniel Radcliffe Has Stayed Away From Fantasy Since Harry Potter
In the wake of the Harry Potter film series' epic final battle between the titular Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), Daniel Radcliffe made the conscious decision to stay away from fantasy-related projects. Radcliffe's first post-Harry Potter movie was the 2012 Gothic horror The Woman in Black, and he subsequently took on roles in thrillers, comedies, romances, crime dramas, and action movies, while he loaned his vocal talents to several adult animated shows.
Some of these weirder and more varied roles have seen Daniel Radcliffe continue to receive critical acclaim. He received praise for his roles of Manny in 2016's Swiss Army Man, Nate Foster in 2016 crime thriller Imperium, Yossi Ghinsberg in 2017 survival thriller Jungle, and as Alfred "Weird Al" Yankovic in the musician's 2022 musical biopic. He also received acclaim for his performances in TBS' comedy anthology series Miracle Workers, but his return to fantasy is one of his most exciting career choices.
Radcliffe has deliberately avoided large-scale fantasy franchises since Harry Potter to escape typecasting and to challenge himself as an actor, and he has certainly accomplished this mission. He had the opportunity to pivot to diverse, offbeat independent films, television, and theater productions after Harry Potter, but Steps will bring him back to fantasy. Of course, Steps and Harry Potter are wildly different, as the former gives Radcliffe the chance to show off both his fantasy and comedic talents.
Rather than playing the traditional heroic Prince, Daniel Radcliffe will voice a quirky and unconventional royal designed to upend classic fairy-tale tropes in Steps, and he has already been lauded by the movie's directors for his huge sense of humor and razor-sharp comedy. Steps gives Radcliffe a chance to display his penchant for bizarre and hilarious characters while diving back into the fantasy genre, as the Netflix movie is shaping up to be a highly creative, genre-defying musical fantasy.
