The Return of Jackie and Judy, Bikini Kill, and more featured at this year’s California festival.
Oakland, Calif., came to life this past weekend with the return of the Mosswood Meltdown music festival. Spearheaded by emcee John Waters — yes, that John Waters — and headliners Iggy Pop and Bikini Kill, Mosswood Park turned into one of the wildest parties of the summer so far. Fans gathered to celebrate the punk icons closing out each day as well as find their new favorite bands.
With a brand new layout in Mosswood Park, each artist kicked off their set with a perfectly curated — and often raunchy — introduction by Waters celebrating their history and getting the crowd very excited. Ping ponging between the main stage and the more intimate amphitheater stage, there was always something rocking. You knew you’d be in good shape catching Snooper leading an insane paced set complete with custom-made puppets, or the Dead Milkmen shouting the punk anthems that got fans into this music in the first place.
Japanese punkers Otoboke Beaver hit the main stage on Saturday with their blistering set, which was easily one of the weekend highlights, only to be followed up by the great Iggy Pop playing hit after hit to wrap up Saturday night. Bikini Kill closed out Sunday with their pioneering Riot Grrrl anthems, just after the Return of Jackie and Judy, led by rockers Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker with Fred Armisen on drums and Toko Yasuda on bass, showered the crowd with a Ramones sing-along set.

With too many highlights to mention, we’re still shaking from midday sets by Mannequin Pussy, drag performer Peaches Christ, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, and the Spits. Mosswood Meltdown was truly one of the tops this summer so far, and we can’t wait to see what next year brings. See more photos below.
