(NewsNation) — Identical female quadruplets have been born in Australia, defying “extremely high risk” odds.
Jenitar Na’amoana, now a 34-year-old mother of eight, gave birth to Emily, Harriet, Alexa and Catherine via cesarean section at 28 weeks and four days on July 14 in Brisbane, Queensland.
“Jenitar has taken everything in her stride from day one — we have never seen a spontaneously conceived pregnancy of this type with quads,” Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital obstetrician Dr. Alexa Bendall said in a release.
“And she has somehow dodged every complication and risk for both herself and her babies to be here today, with four gorgeous newborn girls.”
Bendall added that offspring from a single egg, as Na’amoana’s children were, is a 1-in-every-15-million pregnancy possibility. All four children shared the same umbilical cord, which she said is “unheard of.”
The quadruplets are now residing in the hospital’s ICU and will remain there until full-term.
