Most of us understand a basic principle of good etiquette: focus on your own order. Unless you’re the host covering the entire bill with a predetermined menu, you don’t get to tell another person what they should eat at a restaurant. This rule carries even more weight when it involves someone else’s kids.

Yet one woman recently went online to recount a family lunch experience that demonstrates how certain people think their preferences should govern everyone at the table. It’s a textbook example of a relative crossing a line in a truly bewildering fashion.

The Incident

The setting was a birthday lunch honoring her mother-in-law - a joyful event that should have been all about celebration. But as the waiter started collecting orders, the woman’s sister-in-law dropped a jaw-dropping proclamation. She announced that “ALL the kids would be having kids meal tenders and fries with juice.”

There was no conversation, no consultation with the other parents - just a unilateral decree. The woman was caught completely off guard. She knew full well that a small serving of chicken tenders wouldn’t cut it for her nine-year-old and four-year-old, both of whom regularly order from the adult menu.

So when the waiter reached her end of the table, she politely and appropriately ordered adult-sized meals for her children, noting that she was the one covering the cost. This perfectly reasonable act of parenting sent her sister-in-law spiraling.

The sister-in-law was livid, accusing the mother of having “embarrassed her and made her kids question her.” Her logic? She had told her own children they were all getting “the same thing all the other kids were eating.” Rather than owning up to her overreach, she pinned the blame on the mother for unraveling her little white lie.

The Internet Reacts

The online response, as you might expect, was swift and overwhelmingly vocal. Reactions generally clustered into a few categories, though almost everyone sided with the mother for holding firm.

The biggest group was the “No Way” contingent. These commenters were stunned by the sister-in-law’s boldness. One person captured the collective sentiment perfectly: “Why would she select your children’s meals anyway? Maybe they wanted a burger or pizza. That’s bizarre.”

Someone else stated a straightforward truth: “Anyone ordering for other people is automatically [in the wrong].” The fact that the mother was footing the bill for her own family’s food made the sister-in-law’s behavior all the more absurd. As one commenter bluntly noted, “It’s none of SIL’s business what anyone else eats.”

Next up was the “Devil’s Advocate” group, who attempted to decode the sister-in-law’s underlying motivation. Some speculated it boiled down to control, with one person revealing, “I have a SIL who is the same… it’s become obvious that it’s a control issue. She’s super thin herself, and tries to micromanage everything and everyone.”

Others theorized it was a lazy parenting workaround to prevent meltdowns, suggesting she “doesn’t want to listen to HER kids whine that their cousins got to choose/have something different.”

Lastly, there was the “Been There” crowd, who chimed in with their own tales of domineering relatives at dining establishments. One woman shared a remarkable story about her former mother-in-law, who would become angry whenever anyone ordered something different from what she had chosen.

When challenged, the mother-in-law once “glared at me and shrilled, ‘I made cheerleader!'” as though a high school achievement from four decades ago granted her authority over everyone’s dinner selections. It serves as a stark reminder that this brand of controlling behavior, while startling, is regrettably more common than any of us would like to believe.

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s make one thing absolutely clear: the sister-in-law was entirely out of bounds. It is never, under any circumstance, acceptable to declare what another person’s children will be eating. Every parent holds the right and the responsibility to make choices for their own family based on their kids’ appetites, tastes, and their own financial situation.

The sister-in-law manufactured an awkward scene by making a promise she had zero authority to fulfill. A courteous person would have floated the idea with the other parents in private ahead of time, rather than issuing a public announcement. The guiding principle here couldn’t be simpler: you handle your children, and I’ll handle mine.

Your Thoughts

Do you think the sister-in-law was just trying to keep things easy and equal, or was she wielding an unacceptable degree of control over the entire family?
