Hosting your very first holiday dinner is nerve-wracking enough without a family member trying to rewrite your menu at the eleventh hour. When we open our homes to loved ones, we want to be gracious, but true hospitality is always a two-way street. A guest, or the person bringing the guest, must also show basic manners and respect for the person doing all the heavy lifting in the kitchen.

A young woman recently found herself at the center of a frustrating holiday storm when her younger sibling made an outrageous culinary demand just three days before she was set to host her very first family Christmas.

The Incident

The twenty-three-year-old host was taking on the massive task of cooking Christmas dinner for her family for the very first time. While her older brother agreed to handle dessert, the entirety of the main meal rested squarely on her shoulders.

Out of nowhere, her twenty-one-year-old brother called to casually remind her to prepare a completely vegan variation of the menu for his new girlfriend. According to the host, he acted as if they had discussed this months ago, despite the couple not even dating for very long.

Graciously, the young woman offered to cook a few standard vegan dishes she already knew how to make. But that was simply not good enough for her brother. He demanded she entirely recreate her planned traditional dishes in a vegan way so his girlfriend would not feel like an outsider eating food that looked different.

When the host understandably refused to learn complex new recipes three days before a major holiday, her mother chimed in, scolding her to not be difficult and pressuring her to cater to the brother’s whims.

Fortunately, the host took matters into her own hands and messaged the girlfriend directly. In a shocking twist, the girlfriend knew absolutely nothing about these demands. She was perfectly polite, stated she was happy to eat whatever was available, and even offered to bring her own dish. The brother had manufactured the entire crisis himself.

The Internet Reacts

Readers were quick to rally behind the stressed host, utterly baffled by the younger brother’s entitled behavior and the mother’s complete lack of support for her daughter.

The “Absolutely Not” Crowd

Many commenters were furious on the host’s behalf, pointing out the sheer audacity of demanding a custom menu days before a major holiday. One user perfectly captured the mood, writing, “Tell Bro and Mom that if it's so d.mn easy, they are welcome to do vegan versions of your dinner.”

Another longtime vegan chimed in to praise the host, noting that her original offer was more than generous. They pointed out that finding obscure vegan ingredients at the last minute is a nightmare, adding that a host making a few safe side dishes is usually more than enough to make a guest feel welcome.

The “Devil’s Advocate” Crowd

A few readers tried to see the situation from a culinary perspective, pointing out that basic vegan food is not actually that hard to throw together. They suggested simple sides like baked potatoes or roasted vegetables with olive oil.

However, even these folks agreed that recreating a traditional holiday roast is a monumental task. As one vegetarian of twenty years admitted, “Putting together vegan versions of traditional Christmas dishes can be a b.tch, though. I’m still wary of making my own roasts.” The culinary debate even sparked a side conversation about how butter and animal fat are staples in traditional holiday cooking, making unexpected vegan requests incredibly complicated for a traditional cook.

The “Petty Revenge” Crowd

For those who love a bit of malicious compliance, the best advice involved turning the tables entirely on the demanding family members. Readers felt the mother and brother needed a harsh reality check about the labor involved in hosting.

One commenter offered a brilliant strategy: “Send your brother and mother the recipes and let them know since it's so important to them, you will ensure that there is space for their contributions to the meal.” Others suggested telling the brother to go buy a pre-made vegan roast with his own money if he cared so much about the aesthetics of the plate.

The Etiquette Verdict

This situation is a classic example of someone breaking the cardinal rules of being a good guest. It is incredibly rude to demand a custom, replica menu from a host who is already generously preparing a massive holiday feast.

The Golden Rule of hosting guests with dietary restrictions is simple. A host should make a good-faith effort to provide a substantial, safe option, but they are not required to run a restaurant. The young host did exactly the right thing by offering to make dishes she was comfortable with. Her brother, on the other hand, failed miserably by speaking for his perfectly polite girlfriend and creating unnecessary family drama.

Your Thoughts

Was the host completely justified in refusing her brother’s last-minute menu overhaul, or should she have tried harder to recreate the traditional dishes for his new girlfriend? Share your thoughts and your own family holiday drama in the comments below!
