A homeowner has gained viral attention after sharing images of a next-door neighbor’s laundry piled directly on top of their outdoor air conditioning units, weighed down with bricks to stop the bundles blowing away in the wind.
The post, shared to Reddit by u/Annashleta on July 17, has racked up more than 16,000 upvotes and prompted a wave of alarmed reactions from users on the platform. Images attached to the post show two separate piles of laundry, wrapped inside blankets and duvet covers, resting on top of the AC hubs, each weighted down with a brick.
The homeowner explained in an update that this was not the first time the situation had occurred.
“Update: Neighbors using my ac unit as a dryer for their clothes,” the post read, before addressing the reaction it had already generated. “ETA: I’ve read y’alls comments and concluded that I should’ve left a note on the clothes when I moved them yesterday, that’s on me. But I just don’t feel comfortable talking to the neighbors period.”
The poster confirmed they had since escalated the matter formally.
“I have reported them, and the clothes are gone. If it happens again, another report and clothes will be taken to the office,” they wrote, adding that they did not intend to respond to further comments on the thread, saying there was “enough info from this post, and my last post to form an option.”
The post quickly drew a flood of responses from Reddit users, many of them warning of the potential damage the makeshift drying setup could cause to the AC units.
“Move them again. This is a legitimate hazard. I would not want to lose my AC or start a house fire in this weather,” one commenter wrote.
Another user was blunter about the risk to the equipment: “I would be losing my ******* mind if I saw someone doing this. How to reduce the ACs lifespan by about 100 percent in one easy picture.”
Some commenters pushed for a firmer response than simply relocating the laundry. “Move them… into the trash. They will eventually run out of clothes if you just take them instead of gently moving them,” one wrote.
Others suggested the situation could escalate into something far more serious if left unaddressed.
“If I found clothes abandoned on top of my AC unit with a brick, those clothes will be kept until there’s a conversation, with a camera to catch them inevitably causing property damage to the unit, followed by a felony charge, and then eviction for violation of the nuisance clause,” one comment read, adding that the same principle would apply “if they were left on or in my car, shed, or home,” and concluding: “Some people can’t be reasoned with.”
Other users leaned toward a more measured approach, encouraging direct communication paired with a warning.
“Leave a note too. I would say I’m calling the police if they continue,” one suggested.
