Pitching injuries have been a staple of the Atlanta Braves organization over the last several years, and it looks like they could be dealing with another major issue with one of their most promising young arms. Hurston Waldrep, who just rehabbed his way back from an elbow injury that required surgery to remove loose bodies, was pulled early from his most recent start with the Gwinnett Stripers after experiencing discomfort.

He threw just 36 pitches, and the velocity was down across all of his offerings.

After undergoing surgery during Spring Training, Waldrep worked his way back to the majors and made three appearances for the Braves, recording an 8.44 ERA over 10.2 innings. It’s unclear whether the discomfort began while he was in Atlanta or if it’s something that popped up more recently.

Waldrep made some adjustments to his repertoire last year, and it led to him becoming one of the Braves’ breakout stars during the second half of the season. In 56.1 innings, he posted a 2.88 ERA and averaged nearly a strikeout per inning. He entered the 2026 campaign expected to be a staple in Atlanta’s rotation. That, of course, hasn’t happened, and now there are real concerns about whether he’ll be available for the remainder of this season — or next year, for that matter.

Hopefully, it’s nothing more than inflammation and some extra rest is all that’s needed. We’ll have more when further updates come in.

During the seventh inning of...
