Irish families have been handed the ultimate summer holiday pass.
In a boost for parents trying to keep the kids entertained during the school break, the Office of Public Works (OPW) has announced that all young people under the age of 18 can visit Ireland’s top heritage sites absolutely free for the entire month of August.
Irish Minister of State Kevin "Boxer" Moran made the exciting announcement, which extends the existing "Free Under 12s" scheme to include everyone up to the age of 18 from Aug. 1 to 31. The temporary upgrade means teenagers can now tag along for free, saving families a small fortune in ticket prices and helping to make Ireland’s cultural history more accessible to everyone.

The goal of this OPW pilot initiative is simple: to help young people and families connect with our country’s rich history, beautiful nature, and vibrant culture first-hand.
From ancient stone monuments to stunning stately homes, there is something for the whole family to enjoy.
“I am delighted that all under-18s will once again enjoy free entry to OPW heritage sites this August,” Minister Moran said.
“Whether it’s exploring ancient monuments, visiting historic houses, taking part in interactive tours or discovering Ireland’s cultural heritage first-hand, this initiative offers young people a fun and memorable way to connect with history, nature and culture over the summer holidays.”
However, before you pack up the car and head out, there are just a few simple rules to keep in mind.
First, all children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Second, while the free entry covers almost all fee-paying OPW sites across Ireland, there are two exceptions: Kilmainham Gaol and Bru na Boinne (Newgrange and Knowth) are not included in this free offer.
For some popular spots, you can also book your tickets online in advance to beat the crowds and secure your place.
